Mehd was really happy to start off the 24 day tour with some really good birding in Biak.
Biak Gerygone – Gerygone hypoxantha was a real gem on this amazing little island just north of Papua.
We are not aware of any other pictures of this species anywhere on internet. Please tell us if you have found other pictures.
The taxonomy of this species is still not settled and it is often regarded as a race of G. magnirostris. Acoording to HBW it seems quite distinct in having yellow in plumage, and confined to a long-isolated island with many other distinct endemic taxa.
The birdlife is really unique there but so is also culture, history and nature.
Biak was an important island during WW2 where dutch and japanese soldiers fought at length.
You can see more of the Biak and Numfor birds in the photo album.
